Well Michael blew it out of the water…again! He always takes such spectacular photos. Two of Michael’s photos were selected by the hometown of Keenan Hayes to be presented to Keenan. One wrapped on his truck and one printed as a fantastic canvas. For this reason, we were invited to shoot the Cowboy Downhill.Â
Since 1974 The Cowboy Downhill changes the face of Steamboat Resort for a couple of days back to bygone days of cowboys conquering the Rocky Mountains. Only this time for bragging rights and fun...rather than livelihood! Cowboys who have competed in the events of the National Western Stock Show in Denver Colorado have the opportunity to compete in the Cowboy Downhill. Make your way to the base of the mountain and soon the ski helmets, gators and googles are replaced by wild rags, chaps, and cowboy hats. Â
These days cowboys really can ski. I’ve heard tell of some less than stellar skiers in the early days and I’m sure that as cowboys they are used to a wreck or two. Apparently back in the early days the best wreck won a jar of horse manure!  Visitors from around the world ask these Icons of America to pause for a quick photo op.Â
Grabbing the opportunity to snap a photo with American West Icons....COWBOYS!!
Mr. Charlie Sampson 1982 World Champion Bull Rider
This year included icons such as Charlie Samspon, Billy Kidd (co-founder of the event, with Larry Mahan) and of course Keenan Hayes was there. As were a couple of Denver Bronco Cheerleaders, and Rodeo Queens. Mr. Sampson competed in the Legends & Founder’s Division. Â
Ms. Rodeo Kansas - being a good sport!
TAGLINE!
Competitors compete head-to-head in a slalom course, a good-sized tabletop jump, they must rope a gal (who is called a hostess) and then saddle a horse and make it to the finish line before their compatriot. An overall winner is determined by best time, and ability to complete the course obstacles. Once the head-to- head competition is over, a great stampede is had! All cowboys make their way to the top of the course once more, and as the name implies, they all make their way downhill, together, in true cowboy style!  Our young friend Brice Patterson was the overall winner we look forward to following him as he continues follow his dreams as a rodeo athlete! Â

Ms. Rodeo Washington & Ms. Rodeo Florida
As Michael and I documented the event, we found that we got to educate the looker’s on about the rich history of rodeo, cowboys and girls, and just the richness of the western way of life. Which brings us so much joy!Â
Next year will be the 50th Annual (obviously) I can only imagine who will show up, and how fun that will be!
